About Local, Parish or Town Councils
Town and Parish councils are part of Local Government and as such they and the Councillors are governed by law. They are not private members clubs, residents associations or charities.
All Local, Community, Parish and Town Councils have and most use their powers to tax residents.
Town and Parish Councillors are democratically elected representatives of their communities. They are not volunteers but are elected by residents every 4 years.
Town and Parish councils must have an individual, the Clerk who is a statutory office holder i.e. the position is defined in law and the proper officer. The Clerk is responsible for enacting the parish council's decisions.
The town or parish clerk is not an elected member of a council. The parish clerk is an employee of the council.
