Q: A Councillor's own house is in the same street as planning application. He declares an interest but refuses the Chairmans request that he sit with the public. Is this OK?

A: No - This Councillor clearly has a personal and prejudicial interest and should have left the room for the item.

The Clerk should contact their association of local councils for training and discuss what steps should be taken to protect the Council and the public interest. In the meantime, Clerk and Councillors should read the Good Councillor’s Guide.

The Council is behind the times and it’s amazing that you have not all been referred to the Standards Board for breach of the Code of Conduct.
