Q: A Parish Councillor stood down at the last elections and was then appointed Parish Clerk - can they be paid?

A: No not for the first 12 months if it is the same Parish Council that they were an elected Parish Councillor. The same applies if they were the Parish Chairman. If they have been appointed parish Clerk to a different Parish Council they can of course be paid. You may wish to ensure that the correct appoint procedures were followed, was the post advertised? Were other candidates interviewed? Were the parish council HR procedures followed?
