Between May 1, 2009 and December 7, 2012 the clerk Sarah Berwick stole £11,011.48 belonging to Forncett Parish Council in Norfolk.

In addition to the theft she...

  • falsified an audit report, by forging the internal auditor's signature
  • Increased her own salary without it being authorised by the council
  • doctored bank statements between May 2, 2009 and May 13 2013

The clerk admitted to the fraud which does not appear to have been detected by the council, her employer.

After pleading guilty to false accounting and theft by an employee she was given a 20-week jail sentence suspended for one year and ordered her to do 100 hours unpaid work.
